Telegram is coming soon with NFT? CEO Proposes Blockchain Auctions
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in his personal group proposes to launch usernames and channels using NFTs.
The NFTs are not just hype, it seems that the CEO of one of the largest messenger services in the world has also arrived. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov is now proposing to hold NFT auctions on the blockchain in his personal group of 651,000 people. According to the proposal, usernames and entire channels could be sold.
About Durov:
“The implementation of this concept would create a new platform on which users can sell their usernames to interested parties – completely secured. Ownership would be verifiable on the blockchain through NFT-like smart contracts.”
In his Telegram group, Durov stressed that he was delighted with the auctions of the “The Open Network” (TON) blockchain.
Just imagine what success Telegram could achieve with its 700 million users by selling usernames, groups and channels in an auction.”
TON’s NFT domain names as a role model
The CEO is toying with an NFT auction because he has seen the potential of domain sales. Originally developed by Telegram, the TON blockchain recently held auctions for domains. The 2,000 TON domains brought in 2.4 million toncoin at a price of around $ 1.29.
A profit of $ 3 million.
Especially popular were the names wallet.ton, casino.sound and bank.ton, they were able to generate over 150,000 Toncoin each. Wallet.ton even makes it to a sales value of around 275,000 US dollars.
TON was originally developed by the Telegram team, but was transferred to “The Open Network” after legal disputes with the American Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In 2018, the messenger service attracted the displeasure of the SEC when those responsible decided to conduct the largest initial coin offering in the world at that time.
The 2.9 billion GRAM tokens were sold for $ 1.7 billion in just 3 months, but were subsequently classified by the SEC as an illegal securities sale. As a result, the blockchain was handed over as part of a conciliation agreement.
Scalability as the most important criterion
Durov’s plans may not be limited to username and channel NFTs, according to his own statements:
“Other elements of the Telegram ecosystem, such as stickers or emojis, could later be part of the marketplace.”
CLAY should help with that.
Although the two companies have no strategic connection, Telegram tolerates the exchange of toncoins on the messenger.
Due to the scalability and speed that TON has, it could prove to be an ideal partner. Especially if those responsible intend to offer NFT assets on a large scale.
“Let’s see if we can bring a little Web 3 to Telegram in the next few weeks.”
