Cryptopia, one of the cryptocurrency exchanges, has been hacked recently. As it turns out, it is most likely to be the very first hacking attack on a trading platform. The exchange says that it is doing everything to restore its operations.
Sometimes, a hacking group only threatens to reveal highly secretive government documents concerning the 9/11 terrorist attacks. However, in this story, there are hackers, who did much more than threats.
The beginning of the year could mean the end of the exchange
Cryptopia, a New Zealand cryptocurrency trading platform, has been hacked. After that, the exchange has gone offline. Cryptopia published a statement via Twitter on Tuesday.

Right now, the whole case is under investigation by the New Zealand Police. According to Whale Alert’s tweets, over $3.5 million worth in cryptocurrency has disappeared from Cryptopia. As of today, it is not clear if those funds were moved by the exchange or by the hacker.
New clues, new leads
As Ethereum network data suggests, some of those stolen (or not) assets were transferred to Binance. Changpeng Zhao, CEO of the exchange, quickly addressed that issue. He used Twitter to say that his platform already froze some of the funds.
Just checked, we were able to freeze some of the funds. I don’t understand why the hackers keep sending to Binance. Social media will be pretty fast to report it, and we will freeze it. It’s a high risk maneuver for them. https://t.co/i0PeahLzic

The police have also published a statement updating progress in the investigation. They said that the inquiry is still in the early stages and the police work with Cryptopia to establish what really happened.
The investigators haven’t confirmed yet which cryptocurrencies were involved in hacking. The police also stated:
“We are dealing with a complex situation and we are unable to put a timeframe on how long the investigation may take. We are also aware of speculation in the online community about what might have occurred. It is too early for us to draw any conclusions and Police will keep an open mind on all possibilities while we gather the information we need.”
New Zealand police also ask anyone possessing information which may help the investigation to contact them.
